I was tested on this in the past months during revisions of my novels in prep for publication. I lost something while editing~ I wouldn’t say muse, but something was missing and I found I could not connect to my characters.
First, I was so overwhelmed with making the decision to self-publish, then working on my cover-(which drove me mad. Do the cover myself or hire someone?) keeping up with the gazillion articles and blogs on the internet of the do’s, don’ts of self-pub along with submitting still for an agent…(see my earlier post on Decisions) All that plus family/ home life, day-job, getting fit, etc into an already jammed schedule, the stress stripped away my concentration and the confidence in my novel-writing slipped.
I normally don’t open up on my blog, but came across a few tips that suggested doing so because readers want to know about their author. Hmm, how much do they really want to know? 🙂
Some things I just can’t put out in cyberspace.
Well, let’s just say I keep a journal and write my deep thoughts longhand in bound pages. Besides, I Love the flow of a good pen in hand across the sound of fresh paper, the cool pages against my fingers has a calming effect and charms the encouraged writer back to the front.
So after a spell, the moment passed and all the editing I had completed, I’m running through again with a clearer head, a deep breath, fresh eyes and a heart that whispers~ this is me, I wrote this and it is worthy.
All the other stuff, take in smaller doses: Articles, how to’s, do’s, don’ts, rejection letters will still be there. Too much info can sidetrack you and before you know it you’ve spent more time thinking on that than on your novel, tearing it to bits until you almost don’t recognize it anymore. I know I’m not alone for I’ve read similar posts during my internet distraction moments of soaking up too much information. 🙂
Key is to just write. Write your novel and write what you know. Ye old adage is true. Love what you do and it will show in your story.
On that note, I cannot wait to post here the available date of Book 1 in my Northern Knights Trilogy. Have a wonderful day, night or evening and thanks for stopping by.
